The Cohen Curricula Teacher Resource: Advanced Module A: Intertextual Perspectives: James Joyce Dubliners and the poetry of Seamus Heaney provides a detailed, syllabus aligned program with extensive accompanying resources. The teaching program identifies the outcomes relevant to the study of these texts aligned with the syllabus description and teaching strategies. The program presents a detailed teaching process with suggested lesson sequence and ideas for presenting the module. 15 workshops are presented that incorporate two to three lessons each, or more where necessary, that assist with giving each text the appropriate attention and for workshopping perspectives, context and values significant to the pairing of these texts. Worksheets and resources provide detailed studies for students to engage with the outcomes and the language of the module.

A detailed summary and analysis is provided for every narrative and every poem identifying the perspectives, identifying the key points and providing analysis of Joyce or Heaney’s meaning. These original, detailed analyses can be used as lecture material by the teacher or be provided to students with the accompanying worksheet that focuses on how perspectives, context and values become evident through the language of each text. The correlatives with the paired text/s have been suggested for each individual text explaining how they can be linked in terms of the perspectives and contexts across the material.

The worksheets provided in this resource all contain prompt questions ( and teacher examples where appropriate) to support your students in developing their response to the text. The material is extensive and incorporates vocabulary, deconstruction checklists and workshops for prose fiction and poetry and a glossary of figurative devices with definitions. A concept workshop, heavily annotated with what the syllabus requirements demand is presented ready for students to add their examples from the text – which can be found in the analytical summaries. A detailed ‘Context’ workshop with accompanying worksheets, a ‘Themes, Issues and Ideas’ workshop, a ‘Values’ workshop and our ‘LIMP’ layered deconstruction process are provided; the worksheets are all ready to print off and photocopy emphasising and staying focused on the correlative and intertextual concept of the module. Our 'Essay Writing’ workshop prepares students to engage with the range of essay questions that are found throughout the resource. Scaffolds, sentence starters, checklists and marking rubrics are provided.

This is a very large resource: 22 individual works over the two texts, five weeks of writing, all presented with detailed analysis of language, structure, purpose and context, with the intertextual perspectives identified and paired with relevant texts from Joyce or Heaney's oeuvre, constitutes just under 73000 words and has 188 pages of material ready to use in your classroom.

I have also separated each text into a little workshop of its own for those who prefer to do the texts individually or test whether our work is of value to you and your class. These mini workshops are also available on the website. If you choose to test us out and then decide to buy the larger resource I will refund your earlier purchase of the mini guide.

Very detailed resource February 12, 2015

This resource is syllabus focused and detailed, a change from the generic notes we usually see. The lessons are sequential and thorough. The worksheets are excellent and provide a process for understanding what these texts are offering. My students love the analysis process and are finding the links between the perspectives accessible and tangible. The lecture notes on each text and the fact that the perspectives are linked to the appropriate poems is more than helpful. Very happy  to recommend this resource.
